In Les Awirs near Liège, we converted a coal-fired power station into a 100 % biomass power station, a world first. The power station has a capacity of 80 MW, uses 400 000 tonnes of wood pellets a year and reduces CO2 emissions by 500 000 tonnes a year. The saving in coal is 280 000 tonnes.
As the European leader in biomass - Electrabel uses 2 million tonnes a year - we carried out pioneering work to develop a system that certifies biomass sustainability. The procedure looks at the life cycle, from its origins to the transportation to our power stations. Our certification model is becoming considered as the reference by ever more regulatory bodies.

Together with Volvo Europa Truck, we realized the first CO2-free vehicle factory in the world. Our solution combines energy saving, wind energy, biomass, solar energy and green electricity. Volvo Europa Truck now saves emissions of 14 000 tonnes of CO2 a year. The project is an example of the customized work that Electrabel can deliver. It is a model for similar initiatives.
