Our attitude

Internal mobilisation

In Belgium our 8 000 employees will reduce the CO2 emissions from their activities (excluding electricity generation) by 21 % by the end of 2010. In this way they will be the best ambassadors for rational energy use. Following a technical audit and suggestions from personnel, we have drawn up a specific plan to save energy and CO2. It focuses on energy consumption in buildings, transportation and purchasing.

On this page you'll find more info about

21 % less CO2

The daily activities of Electrabel account for 43 000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in Belgium a year. Energy consumption in buildings and in connection with our purchasing are each responsible for 18.5 %, mobility for 63 %. We are starting an action program in each of these areas in order to reduce our CO2 emissions by 9 000 tonnes by the end of 2010.

Buildings

By the end of 2010 we want to reduce by 800 tonnes our annual CO2 emissions from heating and electricity consumption in buildings via:

  • new applications with higher efficiency
  • encouraging energy-saving behaviour from our employees, etc.

A measuring system will permanently monitor energy consumption.

Mobility

The mobility of our employees accounts for 27 000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. By the end of 2010 the amount must be 5 600 tonnes lower. Our “Clean Mobility Plan” comprises:

  • a flexible mobility budget for employees that valorises environment-friendly choices
  • incentives to use public transport and car pooling
  • facilities for cyclists
  • events that encourage clean mobility
  • promoting new communication technologies to avoid travel.

Electrabel will regularly test this mobility plan against the needs of its employees in order to achieve longer-term results.

Purchasing

Electrabel’s suppliers can also make a contribution. Our “green purchasing” program is intended to reduce the CO2 emissions linked with purchasing daily products from 8 000 tonnes a year to 5 400 tonnes by the end of 2010. In the first phase the focus is on office supplies, electrical equipment, consumer goods, catering and maintenance works. We will place even more emphasis on being environmentally friendly when choosing suppliers, describing products and services and carrying out contracts.
