In October 2008, Electrabel launched its plan ‘Together for less CO2’. It contains a series of commitments regarding generating facilities, services to our customers and support activities. We want to keep our stakeholders informed about the results achieved so far.
Short overview of the ten commitments of our ‘Together for less CO2’ plan
Facts & Figures
In 2008, our renewable energy-based generating facilities increased by 62 MW. Today its total capacity amounts to 465 MW, of which more than 100 MW wind farms.
We generated 1.8 terawatt-hours of electricity from renewable energy sources. This means a rise of 32 % compared to 2007. This amount equals the yearly electricity consumption of 531 000 average households.
Electrabel is the biggest green energy producer in Belgium. In 2008, we generated 55 % of Belgian green electricity certificates.
We avoided the emission of 456 000 tonnes of CO2 by replacing more coal by biomass at the Rodenhuize power station and by stopping a part of the coal combustion in Mol power station.
In 2008, 265 M€ have been invested to construct new wind farms, biomass installations, solar panels, more efficient conventional plants (Sidmar), CCGT-power stations (Amercoeur) and combined heat and power units (Lanxess Rubber and Evonik Degussa).
34 M€ have been invested to reduce emissions of SO2 and NOx.
We developed new services to help our customers to make the right choices when installing photovoltaic panels and to take care of the maintenance.
More than 100 000 households opted for our offer 100 % green energy, made in Belgium. An independent control organism audited and confirmed the renewable and Belgian origin of our green products GreenPlus, Professional Green …
In Bruges, Mechelen and Antwerp, we opened natural gas filling stations to the big public.
Our collaborators reduced their yearly CO2 emissions by 2 000 tonnes, mainly by opting for more eco-friendly transport means. We also installed photovoltaic panels on some of our buildings.
We put a biomass laboratory in service. It examines the safe and sustainable use of biomass species for producing electricity.
